Prevalence of seed-borne mycoflora on different cultivars of sorghum

Abstract

Twenty-five cultivars of were collected from sorghum research unit, Dr. PDKV Akola, Maharashtra, for present studies and were tested for the association of seed-borne mycoflora by using the standard blotter paper method, agar plate method, and deep freeze method as per the standards of ISTA. Seven seed-borne fungi viz., Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium moniliforme, Curvularia lunata, A. niger, Alternaria alternata, Rhizopus stolonifer and F. oxysporum were observed. In a comparative study of seed health testing methods, viz., the standard blotter paper method, agar plate method, and deep freeze method.The standard blotter paper method was found superior in the detection of the seed mycoflora of sorghum with a maximum fungal load (37.15%), followed closely behind by standard agar plate method (35.27%).
