Fungal assessment of gym equipment in itumbiara, goiás, Brazil
Abstract
Gyms are high-risk environments for fungal contamination due to frequent user contact and inadequate sanitation practices. This study investigated fungal contamination on gym equipment in Itumbiara, Goiás, Brazil, and assessed the effectiveness of disinfection protocols. Surface samples from five types of equipment, including adductor/abductor chair, mat, leg press, leg curl machine, and peck deck, were collected before and after cleaning with sanitizers provided by the establishments. Samples were cultured on specific media at 28±2°C for 14 days to identify fungal genera. Results showed significant variations in contamination and cleaning effectiveness based on equipment type and material. Porous surfaces, such as mats, were more susceptible to fungal growth but exhibited a high microbial load reduction post-cleaning. In contrast, non-porous equipment, such as leg presses, showed lower initial contamination and more effective disinfection. Recontamination was evident on frequently used equipment like adductor/abductor chairs, indicating limitations in microbial control over time. Fungi from the genera Cladosporium, Sarocladium, Rhizopus, Aspergillus, and Penicillium were identified, with inconsistent yeast control and occasional microbial load increases after cleaning, suggesting potential cross-contamination or improper sanitizer application. These findings underscore the importance of regular sanitation, tailored disinfectants for different surfaces, and health education to mitigate fungal contamination risks in gym environments and enhance user safety.
