Spontaneous echo contrast, blood viscosity, and cardiac afterload

Abstract
Spontaneous echo contrast may be seen in several cardiac conditions associated with chamber enlargement. The associated stasis and low flow produces rheological abnormalities which cause an elevated whole blood viscosity. The heart therefore must pump a thicker, more viscous blood, essentially an increase in cardiac afterload. This may have an adverse effect in certain cardiac patients. Various treatment options are also discussed.
