Awareness and behaviour of retail investors towards mutual fund investment: Examining investor awareness and key factors influencing investment decisions in Haryana, India

Abstract

This study examines investor awareness and investment Behaviour regarding mutual funds, focusing on demographic influences and decision-making factors. The primary objectives are to assess the awareness level of investors towards mutual fund investments and identify the key factors affecting investment Behaviour. A quantitative research approach is employed, utilizing an exploratory and descriptive research design. Data is collected through a structured survey from 700 respondents across six districts in Haryana, employing stratified random sampling. Statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, T-tests, factor analysis, and correlation analysis are applied to analyze the data. The findings indicate that investor awareness is significantly influenced by age, education, income, and gender, with older, highly educated, and higher-income individuals demonstrating greater knowledge. Gender-based disparities highlight the need for targeted financial education programs. Key investment decision factors include past fund performance, risk perception, fund reputation, and financial advice, with investors prioritizing funds with stable historical returns while relying heavily on expert guidance. The results emphasize the necessity of financial literacy initiatives, transparency in fund disclosures, and risk management education to enhance investor confidence. The study provides valuable insights into investor Behaviour, ensuring more informed participation in mutual fund investments and contributing to a financially literate investor base.
