Influence of ginger varieties on growth performance of mahogany under agroforestry system

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted at farmer’s field in Salgoan village of Mundgod taluk in Uttara Kannada district to “Assess the influence of ginger varieties on growth attributes of mahogany under agroforestry system”. This system comprising of Swietenia macrophylla and arecanut. Mahogany was planted in the year 2018 at a spacing of 3 m x 3 m. The horticulture component arecanut was planted in quincunx planting pattern in the year 2019. Ginger varieties were sown during 2022 as intercrop. The design followed for the present experiment was Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with seven treatments and four replication. The results revealed that all the growth attributes of mahogany showed non-significant difference in regular months of interval. Among the different treatments the increment per cent of all the growth parameters of mahogany showed an increase in trend over the initial growth. The maximum increment per cent for height was recorded in T4 (13.47%) and the lowest was recorded in T2 (9.7%) compared to initial height. Among the girth increment (%) the highest and lowest increment per cent was observed in T4 (30.36%) and T1 (26.23%) respectively. The crown width expansion was found to be non-significant difference. The ginger varieties had no much influence on growth attributes of mahogany. Mahogany is a rapidly growing, short-rotation tree species well-suited for agroforestry and fulfilling industrial demand.
