Biochanin A: Induced vasorelaxation in sheep coronary arteries: A potential cardioprotective agent
Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. Biochanin A, a naturally occurring isoflavone found in red clover (Trifolium pratense), has shown promising cardioprotective and vasorelaxant properties. This study investigates the vasorelaxant effects of biochanin A in isolated coronary arteries of sheep. Coronary artery rings were obtained from healthy adult sheep and maintained in modified Krebs-Henseleit solution under controlled conditions. Isometric tension recordings were performed using a PowerLab Polyphysiograph, with tissues pre-contracted using 30 mM KCl. Cumulative concentration-response curves for biochanin A (10⁻7.5 to 10⁻4 M) were generated to assess its relaxant effects. Results demonstrated that biochanin A induced a concentration-dependent relaxation in sheep coronary artery rings, with significant vasorelaxation observed at 10⁻7 M and reaching a maximum relaxation (Emax) of 118.36±3.07 percent at 10⁻4 M. The pD₂ value was determined to be 2.82±0.58, indicating its potency in modulating vascular tone. These findings highlight the potential of biochanin A as a vasorelaxant agent, suggesting its possible therapeutic application in managing cardiovascular disorders. Further studies are warranted to elucidate its precise mechanisms of action and clinical relevance.
