An unusual occurrence of regurgitation in dairy cows

Abstract

Two different ages of cattle were presented to the Large Animal Medicine unit of the veterinary clinical complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal with the history of anorexia, salivation and regurgitation for past 3 days. On Clinical examination rectal temperature, respiratory and heart rate were elevated. On physical examination, no pain evinced on palpation of the esophagus. Haematological and serum biochemical parameters were within normal range. The stomach tube was able to pass only up to thoracic oesophagus and further advancement was difficult and induced cough and restlessness in animal. An endoscope was introduced through the nasal cavity and advanced into the nasopharynx, oropharynx and oesophagus. This report describes two cattle that were presented for evaluation of esophageal foreign bodies, which were removed under the guidance of endoscopy. A mouth gag was applied and the linear foreign body (String) was successfully retrieved along with partially chewed fodder material through oral cavity by manually with gloved hand in two cattle.
