Study of therapeutic effect of polyherbal formulations on oxidative parameters of colibacillosis calves

Abstract

Neonatal calf diarrhoea is recognised worldwide as one of the biggest challenge for dairy industries. It is associated with pathogenic serotypes of E. coli. A total 40 diarrhoeic calves between the age of 15 days to 1 month were selected and 8 healthy calves were selected for comparative study. All calves were devided in six group. Each group (G-I to G-VI) included 8 calves. Group II Calves were treated with extract of Poly herbal formulation 1/10 of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) dose b.i.d by oral route for 7 days with supportive fluid therapy. Group III-Calves were treated with methanolic extract of Poly herbal formulation 1/10 of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) dose b.i.d by oral route for 7 days with supportive fluid therapy Group I Calves were treated with administered aqueous extract of Poly herbal formulation 1/20 of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) dose b.i.d by oral route for 7 days with supportive fluid therapy. Group V-Calves were treated with Methanolic extract of poly herbal formulation 1/20 of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) dose b.i.d by oral route for 7 days with supportive fluid therapy. Group VI-Calves were treated with Pabadine bolus @ 0.1 gm/kg body weight b.i.d by oral route with supportive fluid therapy. Healthy calves were placed in Group I as control. The collection and sampling was done on 0 days (pre treatment) and 7 days (post treatment). The post treatment data revealed that mean values of oxidative parameters were significantly higher than pre-treatment group. Evaluation of therapeutic efficacy was carried out based on the improvement and regaining towards normalcy in the oxidative stress values of affected calves after treatment. Based on these criteria, methanolic extract of polyherbal formulation was found most effective and efficacy was almost at par with sulphadimidine in clinical cases of diarrhoea associated with E. coli infection in calves, followed by aqueous extract.
