Effectiveness of health education module on knowledge and practice regarding childhood obesity and its adverse effects on health of children among mothers in selected urban areas at Vijayapur

Abstract

Background:Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It's particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once considered adult problems — diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression. Methodology: A quantitative approach with pre experimental pre-test post-test design was adopted for the study. The samples from the selected areas of Vijayapura were selected using purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 60 mothers. The tools used for data collection was structured knowledge questionnaire and practice scale. Results: In pre-test 60(100.0%) of the mothers had inadequate Knowledge and in post-test 2 (3.33%) of mothers had inadequate Knowledge, 26 (43.33%) of them had Moderate Knowledge, and 32 (53.33%) of them had adequate knowledge regarding childhood obesity and its adverse effect on health of children. In pre-test all 60 (100.0%) of them had a adequate practice and in post-test 42 (70.0%) of them had a moderate practice and 18 (30.0%) of them had a adequate practice regarding Childhood obesity and its adverse effect on health of children. The calculated value of the t-test was 27.54 and 24.08 for knowledge and practice respectively, which are greater than the tabulated value of 1.67. This difference is considered statistically significant, as evidenced by a p-value of 0.0001. Conclusion: Health education module was effective in enhancing mother’s knowledge and practice regarding obesity and its adverse effect.
