Effect of aging in Indian population: Comparatative study of latency shifting using CVEMP
Abstract
Aim: The aim of the present study is to compare the latency shifting in aging by using cVEMP in Indian population within the age range of 20-80 yrs.Method: Sixty participants aged 20-80 were tested for cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) using a VEMP system. Electrodes were placed on the sternocleidomastoid muscles, and auditory stimuli were administered to assess muscle responses. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) are a diagnostic test that assess the function of the vestibular system. This test can be conducted using an instrument called a VEMP (vestibular evoked myogenic potential) system. Here's how cVEMP tests is typically performed using a VEMP system: The patient is positioned comfortably in a reclined chair or on an examination table. Surface electrodes are placed on specific muscles, typically the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle for cVEMP. The patient is instructed to relax and keep their head still during the test. In positioning for VEMP tests, the highest response rates were achieved when subjects were supine with elevated and turned heads for cVEMP (99% response rate).Results: This study shows that normal individuals of age over 60 have the latencies of cVEMP (p13 and n23) are longer than in younger adults.Conclusion: It was concluded that in individuals of age over 60 have cVEMP (p13 and n23) latencies are longer than in young adults, indicating age-related vestibular changes. These tests, using a VEMP system, assess muscle responses from SCM muscles, aiding in vestibular function evaluation and disorder detection
