Assessment of variability for distinctness, uniformity and stability in Byadagi chilli genotypes

Abstract

Characterization of crop genotypes based on morphological traits is crucial for varietal identification, conservation, and plant variety protection. The present study aimed to assess the variability for distinctness, uniformity, and stability (DUS) in Byadagi chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) genotypes based on key vegetative parameters. A total of eighty-five genotypes were evaluated for vegetative and fruit quality descriptors following DUS guidelines. Significant variation was observed among genotypes for key traits, enabling precise classification. The majority of genotypes exhibited plant habit, early flowering, longer fruit length, medium fruit diameter, medium length of stalk and very thin pericarp, while a few displayed distinct phenotypic attributes, making them potential candidates for varietal registration. Uniformity and stability were assessed across multiple environments, confirming the reliability of the recorded traits. The findings contribute to the effective differentiation and documentation of Byadagi chilli genotypes, supporting breeding programs and legal protection under Plant Protection Variety (PPV) legislation.
