Optimizing rainwater harvesting systems: Techniques and trends

Abstract

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is a critical water management strategy aimed at addressing water scarcity, particularly in regions facing erratic rainfall, groundwater depletion, and urban water stress. This technique involves capturing, storing, and utilizing rainwater from engineered catchment systems, typically rooftops, and directing it into storage tanks with filtration and first-flush mechanisms to ensure quality. In India, where groundwater is heavily exploited and monsoon patterns are increasingly unpredictable, RWH offers a sustainable alternative by reducing dependence on conventional water sources and replenishing aquifers. Furthermore, it mitigates urban flooding and soil erosion by managing surface runoff, enhancing flood resilience. RWH also contributes to reducing the energy demand for water treatment and distribution, thereby lowering environmental footprints. This paper explores the technological frameworks, benefits, and challenges of RWH, emphasizing its role in fostering water security, promoting sustainability, and adapting to the impacts of climate change in water-stressed regions.
