Studies on sex expression in palmyrah Borassus flabellifer. L in Andhra Pradesh conditions

Abstract

A study was conducted on the sex expression in palmyrah (Borassus flabellifer) at All India coordinated research project on palms palmyrah center horticultural research station, pandirimamidi which is located in tribal area of Alluri sitaramaraju district, Andhra pradesh. The main objectives of the study were the expression of male ness and female ness under the climatic conditions of Andhra Pradesh. The selected plant material of 147 accessions variable germplasm collected and planted from different places of Andhra Pradesh from the year 1991 to 2009 and maintained at HRS, Pandirimamidi. Out of 1776 planted palmyrah pyrenes, 1174 palms survived with a survival percent of 66.1 and in which 56.7 percent male palms 43.3 per cent female palms were recorded. The remaining 52.55 per cent palms are not flowered and still at juvenile stage. According to the data collected from different variable germplasm collections, male ness is higher than female ness in Palmyrah in Andhra Pradesh climatic conditions.
