Effect of high-intensity interval training and interval training on the vital capacity of badminton players

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and traditional Interval Training (IT) on the vital capacity of collegiate badminton players aged 19 to 23 years in Guwahati. A total of 30 players were randomly selected and divided into two groups of 15 participants each. Prior to participation, informed consent was obtained from all subjects. The study utilized baseline spirometry to measure vital capacity as the primary criterion variable. The HIIT protocol involved repeated cycles of 20-second maximum intensity sprints at 85-95% max heart rate, interspersed with 10 seconds of rest over 15-20 minutes, while the IT sessions consisted of 1-minute moderate-intensity running followed by 30 seconds of low-intensity recovery at 65-75% max heart rate for 20-25 minutes. Data collection entailed pre and post-testing of vital capacity, with results analyzed for statistical significance between groups.
