Exploration of diversity in practiced protocol for ABR acquisition in neonates/ infants in India: A surveillance study

Abstract

Objectives: Benefits of early identification of hearing loss on speech and language development has caught attention of various researchers. This has led to initiation of early identification and early intervention programs at national levels. However, there are diversities observed in the protocols utilized for conducting auditory brainstem response test, which is being considered as a gold standard test of evaluating hearing sensitivity for neonates. Hence, this survey was conducted to study this diversity as well as to obtain the detail about generalized protocol followed across India. Materials and Methods: Using a 16-item questionnaire, an e-survey was conducted to study about the protocols followed across India. The questionnaire was circulated among audiologists working with neonates or infants. Their responses were analyzed. Results and Conclusion: The results indicated that there was a great diversity in the choice of protocols used by different practicing audiologists. Hence, to compare and interpret the data at national level, the general consensus is required.
