Comparison of mobile audiometry to conventional audiometry for the assessment of headphones-induced hearing impairment in adults

Abstract

Accurate assessment of hearing impairment is crucial for the prevention and management of hearing-related issues, particularly in the context of headphone use. Traditional audiometry, conducted in a clinical setting, has been the gold standard for evaluating hearing function. However, the emergence of mobile audiometry applications has provided a more accessible and convenient alternative. This research essay aims to compare the efficacy of mobile audiometry and conventional audiometry in assessing headphones-induced hearing impairment in adults. Several studies have explored the reliability and validity of mobile audiometry platforms in comparison to traditional audiometric assessments. A systematic review by Valente et al. (2008) found that mobile audiometry demonstrated good agreement with conventional audiometry, with high levels of accuracy and reproducibility (Valente et al. 2008). Furthermore, a study by Masalski et al. (2013) reported that mobile audiometry was effective in detecting hearing loss caused by headphone use, with results comparable to those obtained through conventional methods (Masalski and Kręcicki 2013). These findings suggest that mobile audiometry can serve as a viable alternative to conventional audiometry for the assessment of headphones-induced hearing impairment in adults. The increased accessibility and convenience of mobile audiometry may improve the reach and frequency of hearing assessments, ultimately contributing to the early detection and management of hearing-related issues.
