The effect of Vitamin E and selenium on mastitis susceptibility in dairy cows: A mini review

Abstract

Mastitis, an inflammatory disease of the mammary gland, remains a major challenge in dairy farming due to its economic and animal welfare implications. Nutritional strategies, particularly supplementation with vitamin E and selenium (Se), have gained attention for their potential to enhance immune function and reduce mastitis susceptibility in cows. This review synthesizes current research on the roles of vitamin E and selenium in modulating oxidative stress, immune responses, and udder health. Evidence suggests that these micronutrients act synergistically to bolster antioxidant defenses, improve neutrophil function, and mitigate the incidence and severity of mastitis.
