Efffect of sex and feeding system on growth rates and economics in lamb farming

Abstract

This study assesses the economic and growth performance of Nellore brown ram and ewe lambs under four distinct feeding strategies: Extensive, Semi-Intensive, Intensive, and Intensive with TMR (Total Mixed Ration). Through analyzing weight gain, feed intake, cost, and returns, we compare the growth and feed expenses for ram and ewe lambs. The results indicate that ram lambs generally achieve higher weight gain than ewe lambs across feeding systems, particularly under Semi-Intensive and Intensive feeding patterns. Both ram and ewe lambs are benefitted by concentrate supplementation. These findings suggest that feeding strategies may need to be adjusted based on lamb sex to optimize production and profitability.
