Innovative approaches in drug delivery through microfluidics and nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs)
Abstract
Microfluidics, the study of fluid manipulation at the microscale, has transformed drug delivery by providing precise control over the development, characterization, and application of therapeutic agents. This review explores the diverse methodologies and technologies utilized in microfluidic systems for drug delivery, including droplet-based platforms, microchannels, and lab-on-a-chip devices. It highlights the application of these technologies in various therapeutic areas, such as targeted cancer treatments, controlled drug release, and personalized medicine. By enabling meticulous control over drug formulation, encapsulation, and release, microfluidics facilitates the development of customized therapies that improve treatment effectiveness while reducing adverse effects. Additionally, microfluidic systems enable high-throughput screening and rapid evaluation of drug candidates and delivery methods under physiologically relevant conditions. The review also addresses challenges associated with scaling up microfluidic technologies for clinical applications. In recent years, the miniaturization of fluidic environments has further expanded the potential of microfluidic systems, offering innovative solutions for nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs).
