Productivity of Soybean-based cropping system as influenced by diverse nitrogen management

Abstract

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is an essential oilseed and leguminous crop in India, primarily grown for its oil content. A field experiment was conducted during Kharif and Rabi seasons (2019-20 and 2020-21) at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola, to assess the productivity of a soybean-based cropping system under diverse nitrogen management. The study, laid out in a Split Plot Design (SPD) with three replications, examined cropping sequences (Soybean followed by Chickpea, Rabi Maize, Safflower, and Potato) and nitrogen management (% Urea-N & FYM-N). Results showed that the Soybean-Potato sequence recorded the highest soybean equivalent yield (8103 Kg ha⁻¹), while Soybean-Maize had the lowest (1989 Kg ha⁻¹). Among nitrogen treatments, 100% RDN (100-0) significantly improved yield (4555 Kg ha⁻¹). The interaction of cropping sequence and nitrogen source significantly influenced yield. The findings emphasize the role of nitrogen management and crop sequencing in optimizing soybean productivity.
