Clinical evaluation of traditional Unani herbal extracts comprising Lupinus albus, crocus sativus, and Cucumis melo seeds for acne vulgaris: A single-arm clinical trial

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris, or Busoore labaniya, is a common dermatological disorder affecting up to 80% of adolescents. While not life-threatening, it significantly impacts self-confidence and mental health, necessitating effective treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a Herbal formulation containing Turmus, Magz-e-Tukhme Khashkhash Safed, Magz-e-Tukhme Kharpaza, Magz-e-Tukhme Baqla, Magz-e-Badam Talkh, and Zafran in managing acne vulgaris. Methods: A single-arm clinical trial was conducted at the outpatient departments of Aligarh Unani Medical College and ACN Hospital, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. A total of 100 patients (aged 12–30 years, both sexes) with clinically diagnosed acne vulgaris were enrolled after providing informed consent. The Unani formulation was administered locally twice daily for 15–20 minutes over 45 days. Acne severity and treatment efficacy were assessed using Cook’s Acne Grading Scale at baseline, day 15, day 30, and day 45. Subjective parameters, including pain, tenderness, dryness, and pigmentation, were also evaluated. Results: Significant improvements were observed in acne severity and associated symptoms.
