A prospective study of visual outcome and IOP changes following Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in patients with posterior capsular opacity

Abstract

The ultimate goal was to interpret all the above data and take the necessary steps to improve the visual outcome and prevent elevation in IOP following Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. A total of 100 patients were included in the study. The age of patients varied between 43-80 years with a mean age of 62.7 ± 7.62 years, there were 51 males and 43 females, on whom after informed consent Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was done. A comprehensive preoperative ophthalmic evaluation including snellen’s visual acuity, slit lamp examination, direct ophthalmoscopy, applanation tonometry and fundus examination (whenever possible) was done. An cruciate opening in the capsule made using ophthalmic YAG laser system. The post operative followup were done 1 hour, 4 hour, 24 hour, 1 week, 1month, 3month and 6month after laser and observed for any complication. The number of male patients treated were more than females. The preoperative visual acuity had diminished grossly in patients with PCO. 85% of patients had vision of 10 mmHg, while 9 (9%) patients had IOP rise of 5-10 mmHg. The IOP was within baseline value after 1 month, as antiglaucoma medication was started in these patients after 24 hours. Out of 100 eyes treated, IOL pitting was observed in 14%, iritis was observed in 2% cases, CME was also observed in 2% and hyphema was seen in 1%. No other complications were seen in present study.
