Utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 technology for plant disease control

International Journal of Research in Agronomy · 2024 · Vol. 7(12) · pp. 984–988

Abstract

Plant diseases pose a significant and escalating threat to global food security, leading to substantial yield losses and economic instability. Traditional breeding methods for developing disease-resistant crops are often time-consuming, laborious, and limited in their scope. However, the advent of CRISPR-Cas9 technology, a revolutionary genome-editing tool, offers a precise, efficient, and targeted approach to combating plant diseases. This technology leverages a bacterial immune system, utilizing a Cas9 enzyme guided by a specific RNA sequence to precisely modify plant genomes. While CRISPR-Cas9 offers immense potential, challenges such as potential off-target effects, regulatory hurdles, and public perception of genetically modified organisms require careful consideration and mitigation strategies. This research paper explores the mechanisms, applications, and challenges of utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 technology for plant disease control, highlighting its potential to revolutionize agriculture and ensure global food security in the face of evolving disease threats. This paper explores the potential of CRISPR-Cas9 in combating plant diseases, including its mechanisms, applications, and challenges.
