Soil organic carbon: Dynamics, storage, and the path to climate resilience

International Journal of Research in Agronomy · 2024 · Vol. 7(12) · pp. 974–978

Abstract

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a critical role in global climate regulation by influencing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change impacts, and enhancing soil fertility. This paper explores the intricate dynamics of SOC, examining its storage mechanisms, the factors influencing its accumulation and decomposition, and its pivotal role in achieving climate resilience. We delve into the impacts of land use change, agricultural practices, and climate variability on SOC stocks. Furthermore, we discuss sustainable land management strategies, such as cover cropping, agroforestry, and reduced tillage, that can enhance SOC sequestration and improve soil health. By understanding the complex interplay between SOC and the environment, we can develop effective strategies to mitigate climate change, enhance food security, and build resilient agroecosystems for a sustainable future.
