Assessing the economics of maize production in western undulating lands of Odisha

Abstract

The study was carried out in major maize-growing districts of western undulating lands during 2022-2023 to know the profitability level of maize production in Odisha. A total of 90 randomly selected maize growers, taking 45 per block, were interviewed using a pre-designed interview schedule. The average yield was found to be 62.73 q/ha. The average costs of maize production were Rs. 42320.59, Rs. 1556.13, and Rs. 53125.15 per hectare on an A cost, B cost, and C cost basis, respectively, and gross return was Rs. 69773 per hectare. The gross profit was Rs. 95666.51, Rs. 86346.95, and Rs. 84861.95/ha on an A cost, B cost, and C cost basis. The gross return was observed to be Rs. 137,987.10 per hectare. Benefit-cost ratios were calculated as 3.26, 2.67, and 2.60 on an A-cost, B-cost, and C-cost basis, respectively. As a result, maize cultivation was more profitable in the western undulating lands of Odisha as compared to other cereals like rice and millets in the study area.
