An eight-element MIMO antenna for 5G wireless communication using DGS technique

Abstract

This research paper presents an eight-element MIMO antenna that utilizes a defected ground structure to provide high levels of isolation and efficiency. The said MIMO antenna has been designed on an economical substrate of FR-4 with a thickness of 1.6 mm having dimensions of 75 mm × 150 mm. The proposed antenna layout comprises 8 identical T-shaped patches and a defective ground plane for suppressing mutual coupling. The proposed MIMO antenna design has shown excellent performance at the selected operational frequencies of 3.4 GHz and 5.1 GHz, having a return loss of -23 dB and -26 dB respectively. Moreover, the S21 parameter which measures the decoupling is as high as -28 dB, which shows a considerable amount of isolation. The antenna has a maximum gain of 2.6 dBi at 3.4 GHz and 3.2 dBi at 5.1 GHz. In conclusion, the proposed novel antenna design helps overcome the problems of the current MIMO antennas and can serve as a potential solution for 5G technologies.
