Assessment of correlation coefficients between yield and its components in French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cv. Pant Anupama

Abstract

French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a popular vegetable crop recognized for its soft pods. It is also known as a snap bean, garden bean, green bean, edible podded bean, string bean, fresh bean, or vegetable bean. To find out the impact of organic and inorganic fertilizer on growth and its yield-attributing traits of French beans, the present investigation entitled “Assessment of Correlation Coefficients between Yield and Its Components in French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Under Dhampur Conditions’’ was conducted at Horticulture Research Farm, Dhampur (Bijnor), during the Rabi season 2019-2020. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design comprising eight treatment combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizer and replicated thrice. Correlation coefficient analysis measures the mutual relationship between plant characters and determines the component character on which selection can be made for phenotypic improvement of yield. The correlation coefficient provides a clear picture of the extent of the association between a pair of traits and indicates whether simultaneous improvement of the correlated traits may be possible or not. The knowledge of phenotypic association between yield and its component characters helps in improving the efficiency of selection for yield by making proper choices and balancing one component with another. The correlation among traits revealed a highly significant and positive association of green pod yield (q/ha) with plant height, green pod diameter (60 and 75 DAS), and the number of pods per plant (60 and 70 DAS). This indicates that these traits play a pivotal role in determining the overall yield potential of French bean. Selecting genotypes with superior performance in these traits can lead to significant yield improvements and aid in developing high-yielding varieties.
