A study to evaluate the morbidity profile of deaf silent children enrolled to ascertain their nutritional state in a District of Western India

Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess the morbidity profile among Deaf mute children attending organizations and to determine their nutritional status among them. Methods: The study design was institutional based cross-sectional study and 100 deaf-mute children were selected using a convenient sampling technique. Results: Tooth disorders (75%) such tooth cavities and yellowing were the most prevalent morbidity among deaf mute children, followed by digestive system ailments (71%). More than two thirds (71%) had asthma or pneumonia. Most thyroid patients had hypothyroidism and used medicines. Ear discharge and otitis media were detected in 25%. Although not statistically significant (P=0.1), 53 female deaf-mute children experienced dental caries compared to 18 boys. The study population was 14% undernourished and 24% overweight or obese. Undernutrition was more common in males and overnutrition in girls, although not statistically (P=0.7). Conclusion: The current study found that many deaf-mute youngsters experience dietary deficits and morbidities. Regular health checks, treatment, and health education for children and caregivers are needed.
