Occurrence of the zoonotic parasites Hymenolepis diminuta (Rudolphi, 1819) and Syphacia muris (Yamaguti, 1935) in laboratory Rat from Guwahati, Assam, India

Abstract

Laboratory animals are of great importance to biological and biomedical experiment and research. Infection with parasite like Hymanolepis diminuta and Syphacia muris affects negatively producing various clinical sign which in turn affects negatively in production of reliable and reproducible experimental data, which plays a pivotal role in any biological research. Hymanolepis diminuta and Syphacia muris were detected in laboratory reared wistar Rat and in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, India. However, being zoonotic in nature, detection of these two parasites is of great significance and point of concern for the researcher and laboratory attendants. Although there are reports of human infection with these parasites from the Assam but till now these parasites were not reported from laboratory Rats from the area. So this communication can be considered to be the first report of Hymanolepis diminuta and Syphacia muris in Rats from Assam, India.
