Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of Nigella sativa black cumin seeds

Abstract

Plants are the greatest bio resource of pharmaceutical intermediates, dietary supplements, contemporary medications, nutraceuticals, chemical entities for synthetic pharmaceuticals, and a reservoir of prospective phytochemical substances. Oil and seeds have long been used in folklore for various food and medical systems. The seeds of Nigella sativa have long been used in folklore for various food and medical systems in India. The current work determines the phytoconstituents of Nigella sativa using a preliminary phytochemical study and GCMS analysis. The ethanol extract's phytochemical examination revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, phenolic compounds, gums, mucilage, volatile oils, etc. A total of twenty-three bioactive phytochemical compounds were identified in the ethanolic extract of Nigella sativa using GCMS. Among the 23 compounds, major peak values were obtained for the compounds such as 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid, ethyl ester (44.137%), Thymoquinone (20.538%), and Hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester (11.300%).
