Occurrence of canine parvoviral infection in puppies with reference to age, breed and gender

Abstract

Canine parvoviral gastroenteritis (PVGE) is a highly contagious disease of less than one-year age group dogs characterized by anorexia, vomiting, haemorrhagic foul-smelling diarrhoea, dehydration and death. The present study was conducted to assess the influence of host determinants associated with the occurrence of PVGE in puppies of less than one-year age. Rapid antigen test and PCR were conducted to assess the occurrence based on age, breed and gender. The results showed higher occurrence of canine parvoviral (CPV) infection in puppies belonging to 3-6-month age group female Labrador Retrievers followed by Non-Descriptive puppies, Rottweilers and German Shepherd Dogs.
