Role & consequences of optimal phosphorus application on Performance & Productivity of mungbean: A review

Abstract

Moong beans are essential for sustainable agriculture because they improve soil fertility and health. Moong bean, which has a associative companionship with some microorganisms in the soil, can boost nitrogen (N) levels through biological nitrogen fixation. However, in order to maximize such capabilities, legumes require more phosphorus (P), which is necessary for energy transformation in nodules. This review demonstrates the role of soil phosphorus in root development, including uptake and assimilation. Phosphorus is essential for nutrient uptake, root development, and growth in moong bean harvests. However, most agricultural soils have inadequate phosphorus to support efficient BNF because it exists in stable chemical complexes that plants cannot readily access. Phosphorus deficiency severely affects yield in leguminous crops. Furthermore, there is a need to improve P use efficiency (PUE) for increased legume productivity and soil health. Improving the phosphorus utilization efficiency of applied fertilizer necessitates increased phosphorus acquisition from soils by crops for growth and development.
