Isolation and characterization of potential sulphur oxidizing bacteria from marshy land, paddy rhizosphere, sewage biogas slurry and mine soil

Abstract

Sulphur is one of the basic building blocks in microorganisms, plants and animals and hence it is considered to be vital for life. In the present study, a total 36 isolates which were able to oxidize sulphur through the production of sulphate were obtained from the samples of selected places of Maharashtra. Out of thirty-six isolates, seventeen isolates were selected based on the maximum pH reduction test. In this experiment, Sulphur oxidizing bacterial isolates SOB-3, SOB-8 and SOB-13 which was found efficient under in vitro study. The highly efficient three sulphur oxidizing bacterial isolates were selected for the development of consortium as delivery in the form of liquid-based bio formulation in onion field.
