Financial considerations and resource mobilization in Indian university sports: Opportunities and challenges

Abstract

This study examines the financial challenges and resource mobilization opportunities within Indian university sports, focusing on two key domains: infrastructure sustainability and financial considerations. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to 60 sports directors and semi-structured interviews with 12 directors, representing universities across India. Findings highlight critical issues such as insufficient funding for talent identification, disparities in travel allowances, and a lack of government support for international participation, such as in the FISU Games. The study underscores the importance of adopting structured financial models and resource mobilization strategies, drawing insights from international practices, including NCAA, BUCS, and UniSport Australia. Recommendations include integrating university sports into the Khelo India framework, implementing minimal allowance guidelines through AIU, and fostering collaborations with national federations to enhance athlete development. The paper concludes that strategic financial interventions, e-governance adoption, and enhanced funding mechanisms are pivotal to unlocking the potential of Indian university sports and aligning them with global standards.
