Isolation and molecular characterization of Salmonella from diarrhoeic cases of goats

Abstract

Livestock is essential for the livelihoods of most people. Goats serve multiple purposes, including the production of meat, milk, and skin. However, diarrhoea remains a common health problem in goats, leading to significant economic losses. Salmonella is a major cause of infectious diarrhoea and poses a zoonotic risk globally. Current study aimed to isolation and characterization of Salmonella from faecal samples collected from diarrheic goats in and around the Bidar district. Identification was conducted through biochemical testing and confirmed via the 16S rRNA gene. Out of 132 samples collected, seven tested positive for Salmonella using standard microbiological techniques on selective media. These isolates were characterized morphologically and culturally, followed by biochemical tests. PCR analysis confirmed the invA gene in all seven isolates, showing a 284 bp diagnostic amplicon specific to this virulence gene. The study demonstrated pathogenic Salmonella isolation from diarrhoeic goats and regular surveillance of bacteria in flock to prevent potential outbreaks among both animal and human populations in the region.
