Habitat, socio and economical value of Cynodon dactylon (L.) and Ocimum sanctum (L.) for rural people sustainable livelihood

Abstract

The herbal plants Cynodon dactylon (Linn.) and Ocimum sanctum are widely available plantsin the rural and waste lands. In addition, thulsi and cynodon plants are highly demanding herbal plants in Ayurveda for curing many common diseases of human beings and animals. Based on the concepts, the observation was made in the herbal plants available in the farm area of this college. Among the various plants, the herbal plants, Thulsi and Cynodon plants were found to be the highest number and growing as a perennial nature throughout the year. Based on the above habitat characteristics, in the present study was under taken to estimate the socio and economical value ofthe Condon dactylon (Linn.) and Ocimum sanctum was conducted. The study revealed that the economic value of the herbal plants were found to be better through selling these plants in religious places and obtaining substantial income for their livelihood without any investment due to these plants abundance in certain season and also widely found in the waste lands of rural areas.
