Importance and future prospects of baby corn (Zea mays L.) in India

Abstract

Maize cultivation for vegetable purpose, particularly baby corn is a diversified crop that plays a significant role in the global food market and holds a good position as value added product in food industries. Baby corn is the female inflorescence (ears) in the maize plant, harvested within two days of silk emergence and is crispy and sweet in taste, which is a good source of foreign earning exchange for India and successful in some countries like Thailand and Taiwan. Now it has proven to be a successful venture throughout the world. Because of it’s short life span it is possible to take 3-4 crops in a year and proven a good returns for the growers. The importance, nutrient status and future progress of baby corn can be easily understood by this article.
