Abstract

Embryo and endosperm culture are essential techniques in plant tissue culture utilized for improving vegetable crops through hybridization, mutation induction, and germplasm conservation. The endosperm, a triploid tissue resulting from double fertilization, serves as a nutritive tissue crucial for embryo development. Embryo culture involves isolating and culturing embryos from seeds, enabling the rescue of hybrid embryos and inducing genetic variability. Endosperm culture focuses on the in vitro cultivation of endosperm tissue, offering insights into its nutritional requirements and metabolic processes. These techniques have evolved significantly since their inception in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with advancements driven by the quest to understand plant growth and development. From the early experiments of Gottlieb Haber land to modern applications in genetic engineering, embryo and endosperm culture continue to shape the future of agriculture and biotechnology.
