Effect of rice-derived distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on the serum lipid profile of commercial broiler chicks
Abstract
An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of rice-derived distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on the serum lipid profile of commercial broiler chicks. A total of 2250 day-old broiler chicks were randomly allocated to nine treatment groups, each with five replicates. The birds in the control group were fed a basal diet that met all nutrient requirements according to the standards outlined by BIS (2007). The birds in treatment combinations fed with the different levels of rice DDGS at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 percent, respectively. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected from one bird per replicate into anticoagulant-free tubes, allowed to clot, and then centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. The clear serum was stored at 4°C for subsequent analysis. The results showed non-significant difference between the chicks fed with the ration containing up to 16 per cent rice DDGS and those in the control group diet. It was observed that the broiler chicks' serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein did not show any negative impact from incorporating rice DDGS as a substitute for soybean meal. It was concluded that rice DDGS may be used in broiler diets up to 16% as a protein source.
