Examining the supply chain management of palm oil in selected firm and two competitor firms: Understanding the perception of supply chain partners

Abstract

The edible oil industry in India faces challenges such as high import dependency and fluctuating prices driven by geopolitical and climatic factors. This study evaluates the supply chain dynamics of refined palm oil by focusing on selected firm, a state-run enterprise, and its competitor firms in Telangana. It examines procurement processes, distribution channels, and marketing strategies using a blend of primary data collected from distributors, retailers, and suppliers and secondary sources such as government reports and journals. Key findings include the critical role of streamlined procurement practices, efficient distribution mechanisms, and targeted marketing in enhancing competitiveness. Selected firm relies on multiple distribution channels to cater to diverse consumer segments while facing constraints like limited storage capacity and lack of promotional strategies at the retail level. Comparisons with two competitor firms. highlight differences in operational efficiencies, distributor incentives, and market presence. Quantitative analyses reveal marketing costs and margins across different channels, with traditional retail contributing the highest share of sales. Perceptions of supply chain partners and retailers underscore the importance of competitive pricing, consistent product availability, and responsive customer service. The study concludes with recommendations for improving Selected firm’s supply chain and marketing efforts to better compete with private firms in the edible oil sector.
