Effect of Sulphur levels on growth yield and quality of Brassica species under different sowing time

Abstract

The field experiment entitled Effect of Sulphur levels on growth yield and quality of Brassica species under different sowing time was conducted during the rabi season of 2023–24 at the Instructional Farm, School of Agricultural Sciences, Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Dabok, Udaipur. The study evaluated the impact of two sowing dates (12th and 27th October), and three sulphur levels (0, 10, and 20 kg ha-1) on growth, yield attributing parameters, yield, quality, and economics of two Brassica species (B. napus and B. juncea). These treatments were evaluated under split plot design with three replications. The results showed that early sowing (12th October) significantly enhanced growth parameters, seed yield, biological yield, stover yield, oil content, and net returns, with Brassica. juncea outperforming B. napus. Sulphur application positively influenced plant height, dry matter accumulation, 1000-seed weight, and oil yield, with the highest performance observed at 20 kg S ha-1. The highest seed yield (1792 kg ha-1) and oil yield (617.78 kg ha-1) were recorded for Brassica. juncea sown on 12th October with 20 kg S ha-1 under the same treatment combination. Overall, the study concludes that early sowing combined with 20 kg sulphur ha-1 optimizes growth, yield, and profitability in Brassica cultivation, with B. juncea showing superior adaptability under the experimental conditions.
