Evaluating the impact of robotic hand training on post-stroke rehabilitation: A comparative study with conventional therapy

Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, significantly impairing hand function and limiting independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). This randomized controlled trial (RCT) examines the effectiveness of Robotic Hand Training (RHT) versus Conventional Therapy (CT) in improving post-stroke hand functionality. A total of 136 participants were randomized into RHT or CT groups, undergoing 5 sessions per week for three months. The primary outcome, assessed using the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT), revealed significant improvements in both groups, with no statistically significant differences between them. This study emphasizes the feasibility and comparability of RHT, highlighting its potential as an alternative or adjunct to CT. Recommendations include integrating robotics into rehabilitation programs to enhance accessibility, intensity, and standardization.
