Digital and communication tools (DCTs): Constraints and suggestions

Abstract

The integration of Digital and Communication Technologies (DCTs) in agriculture is transforming traditional farming, offering tools to enhance productivity, optimize resource management, and improve market access. This study examines DCT adoption among farmers in Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu, highlighting benefits such as real-time market information, improved decision-making, and productivity gains. While DCTs provide advantages like streamlined supply chain management, pest and disease control, and increased financial inclusion, several infrastructural, technical, and socio-economic constraints hinder their full potential. Infrastructural constraints include limited access to essential devices (e.g., smartphones) and inadequate rural internet connectivity, restricting farmers’ ability to access timely information. Technical constraints such as a lack of trained support, complex software updates, and limited local language interfaces further impede accessibility for those with limited digital skills. Skill and knowledge gaps are also significant, as many farmers lack digital literacy and struggle with technical instructions, especially in the absence of localized training programs. Economic constraints further restrict DCT adoption, with high internet costs, limited financial support, and a lack of subsidies posing financial challenges. Lastly, social and cultural constraints such as reliance on traditional practices, limited peer support, and gender-based disparities in access affect DCT acceptance in farming communities. The study recommends expanding rural network infrastructure, simplifying user interfaces, increasing training programs, and providing financing options to overcome these barriers. Addressing these issues can foster a supportive environment for digital agriculture, contributing to a sustainable and data-driven agricultural sector.
