From source to sustainability: The water quality dynamics of Chandil and Hatia Dams
Abstract
Water quality is a critical determinant of aquatic ecosystem health and suitability for human use. This study evaluates key physico-chemical parameters of water from Chandil and Hatia dams in Jharkhand, India, during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods. Parameters such as pH, TDS, TSS, BOD, COD, phosphates, DO, total hardness, sulfates, nitrates, temperature, and electrical conductivity were analyzed. The results indicate that Chandil Dam exhibits better water quality with lower BOD (4.85 mg/L), COD (11 mg/L), and TSS (10.67 mg/L) compared to Hatia dam, where higher pollution levels (BOD: 8.325 mg/L, COD: 20 mg/L) were recorded. Both dams fall within acceptable ranges for most drinking water standards, but Hatia dam requires further treatment for organic pollutants. These findings provide essential insights for managing water resources and aquaculture in these reservoirs.
