Clinical and functional outcomes of personareg; cruciate retaining knee system in total knee arthroplasty after five years: A prospective study

Abstract

Background: The study aimed to assess clinical, patient reported, and functional outcome of primary, cemented total knee arthroplasty done using Persona implant system (cruciate retaining technique), along with implant survivorship. Methods: Over an eight-year period, 86 consecutive knees that underwent primary, total knee arthroplasty with the Persona cruciate retaining system were assessed at six weeks, six months, one, two, three, and five years using patient related outcome measures like health states and EuroQol five dimension questionnaire, in addition to clinical and functional outcomes. Implant status was assessed using plain radiographs when a failure was suspected. Results: Health state indices and EuroQol five dimension score which showed statistically significant improvement from preoperative mean of 58.25±9.85 and 0.2±0.31to 82.61±8.40 and 0.87±0.15 at six weeks respectively, and continued to improve. Most notable among other aspects of the questionnaire, was knee pain at rest and while walking, which reduced to 0 (0%) and 2 (2.33%) knees at one year follow up from 85 (98.84%) and 86 (100%) respectively. No case of implant failure or infection was noted. Conclusion: The Persona CR knee showed good clinical and patient reported outcomes with no cases of implant failure till five years after the surgery.
