Prospects of mariculture in Gujarat: Opportunities, challenges, and strategic pathways: A review

International Journal of Advanced Biochemistry Research · 2024 · Vol. 8(12S) · pp. 491–503

Abstract

Mariculture in Gujarat holds significant potential for advancing the state's fisheries and aquaculture sectors. With over 1,600 km of coastline, diverse marine ecosystems, and favorable environmental conditions, Gujarat is well-positioned to capitalize on sustainable marine aquaculture practices. This paper explores the opportunities, challenges, and strategic pathways for mariculture development in the region. Key opportunities include enhanced seafood production, employment generation, and contributions to the blue economy. However, challenges such as environmental sustainability, regulatory frameworks, and technical expertise need to be addressed for effective growth. Strategic recommendations emphasize public-private partnerships, research and development, policy reforms, and stakeholder involvement to unlock the full potential of mariculture. Sustainable practices and modern technologies are essential for ensuring both economic success and ecological balance in Gujarat’s mariculture sector.
