Correlation and path analysis studies for growth yield and yield attributing traits in yardlong bean (Vigna ungiculata subsp sesquipedalis L.) genotypes in eastern dry zone of Karnataka

Abstract

Genetic assessment by using correlation and path analysis studies of forty-five genotypes of yard long bean, at College of Horticulture, Kolar, Karnataka. High desirable vegetable genotypes were studied by use of correlation and path coefficient analysis to explore the variation, character association among different attributes and to study the direct and indirect effect of nineteen different characters on pod yield per plant. The genotypic correlation studies revealed that pod yield per plant (g) had a significant and positive association with traits like number of cluster per plant (0.742G 0.556P), number of pods per plant (0.703G 0.673P), average pod weight (0.669G 0.608P), pod length (0.627G 0.561P), number of pods per cluster (0.447G 0.326P), vine length (0.327G 0.295P), primary branches (0.317G 0.310P), indicated that pod yield per plant exhibited stable positive association at genotypic and phenotypic level with traits except days to first flowering (-0.255), days to 50 per cent (-0.206), days to first harvest (-0.146), cluster length (-0.058) and pod girth (-0.016) at genotypic level. While the phenotypic correlation revealed that, days to first flowering (-0.245), days to 50 per cent flowering (-0.170), days to first harvest (-0.120), cluster length (-0.043) and pod girth (-0.042) were negatively correlated and rest characters were positively correlated with pod yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis showed that number of clusters per plant (2.435), average pod weight (2.224) and number of leaf set (2.035) at genotypic level exhibiting high positive direct effect on pod yield per plant. Similarly, these traits also had a significant positive correlation with pod yield per plant indicating that direct selection based on these traits would improve in pod yield per plant in crop improvement programme.
