A comparative analysis of mental toughness among combat sports and precision sports athletes

Abstract

This study compares the levels of mental toughness between combat sports athletes and precision sports athletes to elucidate the psychological attributes distinguishing these two athletic populations. A sample of 120 athletes, comprising 60 participants from each group, completed a standardized questionnaire assessing various dimensions of mental toughness, including rebound ability, ability to handle pressure, concentration, confidence, and motivation. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were utilized to analyze the data, with a significance level set at 0.05. The results revealed significant differences in concentration and motivation between combat sports athletes and precision sports athletes, with precision sports athletes demonstrating higher levels of concentration and combat sports athletes exhibiting greater motivation. However, no significant disparities were observed in rebound ability, ability to handle pressure, confidence, or overall mental toughness between the two groups. These findings underscore the nuanced interplay between sport-specific demands and psychological resilience, informing tailored interventions to optimize athlete performance and well-being within each athletic context. Further research could explore the mechanisms underlying the observed differences in mental toughness and investigate its dynamic evolution over time.
