Advancements in shrubs cutting machinery for woody perennial crops: A review

Abstract

The cultivation of woody perennial crops such as henna (Lawsonia inermis), Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana), Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), mesquite (Prosopis cineraria), and Salvadora (Salvadora oleoides) provides a promising, sustainable alternative to overcome these challenges. This paper focuses on the development and introduction of advanced shrub-cutting machines specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of woodies and similar applications. This research seeks to address the shortcomings of existing machines by incorporating innovative design features that improve both the operational efficiency and economic feasibility of shrub cutting processes. In particular, cutting mechanisms, ergonomic tool designs, and the optimization of cutting speeds could significantly enhance the efficiency of the harvesting process, thereby reducing the dependence on manual labor and improving overall productivity in these arid and semi-arid regions. In addition, traditional brush cutters also suffer from significant operational drawbacks, including poor maneuverability and limited cutting efficiency, which further highlights the need for design improvements. By advancing these machines, it will be possible to reduce labor costs, improve the precision of cutting operations, and ultimately increase the productivity and sustainability of shrub management and related agricultural activities.
