Water-efficient crop production: Agronomic strategies for drought-prone areas

Abstract

Water scarcity is a critical challenge for agricultural production, particularly in drought-prone areas where water availability is unpredictable. Efficient water management in crop production is vital for ensuring food security and sustainability in these regions. This review article explores agronomic strategies aimed at enhancing water-use efficiency in crops under water-limited conditions. The paper discusses various approaches, including the use of drought-resistant crop varieties, soil moisture conservation techniques, and optimized irrigation methods. It also examines the role of crop management practices such as planting density, crop rotation, and intercropping in improving water efficiency. Additionally, the integration of climate-smart agriculture and precision farming technologies are highlighted as promising solutions for water conservation. The review emphasizes the importance of adopting a holistic, multi-faceted approach combining genetic, agronomic, and technological innovations to optimize water use and maintain crop productivity in regions vulnerable to drought. Finally, the article underscores the need for policy support and farmer education to promote the widespread adoption of these strategies.
